Dear parents and carers
This week has been full of joy and wonder! We had the Y6 Variety show on Tuesday, which was a brilliant compilation of the children’s talents and humour, and great to see. Well done Y6!
Then on Wednesday Y5 singers took part in a Domino Schools ‘Big Sing’ event – they were also brilliant. It was just so good to see children singing all together – the sound they made was fantastic to hear. Well done to Y5 singers!
HOT WEATHER WARNINGS
The weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday next week shows it is expected to be exceptionally hot. In these cases, we ask that you make sure the children have sun cream on and that they have a hat in school. They must also have a water bottle so we can help keep the children hydrated. The recommendation is that children wear light clothing, so summer dresses, shorts, t-shirts (preferably uniform!) Please do not send your child in with a jumper on Monday and Tuesday if the weather is as hot as expected. We will make sure that the children spend some time outside, but will keep them in the more shady areas.
STAFF LEAVERS
We have several members of staff leaving us at the end of next week. As you know, Mrs Weeks will be retiring, and Mrs Butter is leaving to continue her cancer treatment. The two are well loved members of the team, who will be missed greatly. Also leaving us, will be Miss Borrowdale-Cox, who moves on to the Dolphin School, and Mrs Dowding – we wish both of them well in their new ventures – and Mrs Mihaylova, one of our one to one TAs is taking up a post as a teaching assistant in Westbury on Trym. Mrs Stiby has been as busy as a beaver this year, working as an apprentice teacher in Year 2 – she has successfully completed her training and has been awarded qualified teacher status. Brilliant news for Mrs Stiby, who goes off into the world of teaching with our very best wishes. We will also say a temporary goodbye to Mrs Leach, who will be on maternity leave from September.
WEAR PINK DAY
To say good bye to Mrs Butter particularly, we would like to have a ‘wear something pink’ day on Tuesday. This can be a whole outfit or just one item of clothing eg socks, hairband, anything cool bearing in mind the weather forecast! We would love the children to make donations of £1.00 on this day, which we will give to Cancer Research and Breast Cancer charities. Thank you
GARDEN OF HOPE.
This week, myself, Miss Sibbering and a group of children planted our Garden of Hope. We hope this garden can be a place of reflection for parents and children, as it has been planted in memory of parents our children have lost over the past 18 months or so. We have two special roses in the garden, one called ‘Diamond Dad,’ for Paul and Tony, and the other called ‘Mum in a Million,’ for Charlotte and Lorna. These roses were kindly donated by Lisa Gee, many thanks to her for these special treasures we now have on our school grounds. We have also added our remembrance pebbles which the children made earlier in the year. Please take a walk to the front of the school to have a look!
GOVERNOR VACANCIES
We now have three governor vacancies which we are looking to fill. If you are interested in being a school governor, please express your interest to the Chair of Governors, Beth Monis, via the school email. You can also talk to several parent governors to see what the expectations are – Beth Monis (current Y3 parent), Claire Rogers (current Y1 and Y3 parent), Emma Normanton (current Y5 parent)
Plastic bags!
Please can your child bring in a carrier bag on Monday – it’s that time of year when children bring home all of their exercise books for you to enjoy J
ROAD NEWS
Just so you are aware, there are road closures around the school over the holidays, as gas works are taking place on Teewell Hill. These are expected to take 4 weeks to complete, so hopefully it won’t have any impact on the school run! You can keep updated by following South Gloucestershire Street Care on Facebook

This week we hear from Deer and the Year 5 classes, with their book reviews.
Miss Thomas recommends ‘When Sophie thinks she can’t’ by Molly Bang.
"I read this to my class when we were learning about growth mind-set and it is a lovely picture book that also helps children to understand how their minds work. The main character Sophie becomes very frustrated in class when she is struggling with a maths puzzle. She keeps saying ‘I can’t do it!’ until her teacher steps in and helps her to understand that struggling to do something is part of learning. There are lots of useful phrases linked to growth mind-set within the book, including the power of the word yet! I would recommend this book to any children who become frustrated or upset when faced with a challenge."
Wade recommends ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl.
"I really enjoyed this book because it was very funny. One of the most exciting parts was when Mr Fox had his tail shot off! The ending was great because they all had a feast."
Mr White reviews 'Tuesday' by David Wiesner
"One of my favourite books. This is a wordless book that consists of everything which I love about books. Mystery, curiosity and of course humour. As we follow the story more questions are raised than answers before finalising with next Tuesday. A fantastic illustrative book and a must read for children of all ages!"
"The book is about a young boy called Harry whose parents are killed by an evil villain. He is now called the boy who lived. On his eleventh birthday, he finds out he is a wizard and is invited to go to a magical school called Hogwarts. His mean auntie and uncle refuse to let him go but Hagrid (a giant) takes matters into his own hands and takes Harry anyway, whilst giving his horrible, spoilt cousin (Dudley) a pig tail. At Hogwarts, Harry makes friends with Hermione and Ron and feels like he has a family for the first time. There they get into all kinds of mischief and have to face He Would Should Not Be Named.
The main message of this book is even though Harry did not have the best start to life, he was able to achieve great things and have a good life.
I particularly liked when the Dursley’s house is flooded with letters for Harry that they desperately tried to ignore.
This book is good for people who have amazing imagination and like magical stories. I would give this book 5 out of 5."
