Dear parents and carers
The children have definitely found their feet this week, and have been busy working away on their learning. We have been talking about ‘being the best we can be’ and how we can all play our part in ensuring the success of our school.
Lunchtimes have been a challenge for some of our children to be at their very best this week, and so we have taken the decision to stop football for the time being as it is causing too many issues. We are soon to have our all-weather pitch built, which will be used for football at lunchtimes on a rota basis. We are also taking part in the OPAL project this year. OPAL means ‘outdoor play and learning’ and by signing up we will audit play provision, draw up an action plan, and then work with the PSFA to increase opportunities for the children at lunchtimes. There will be some great developments over the course of the year which we are really looking forward to!
Government White Paper
The government issued a White Paper earlier this year, which says that all schools should be part of an academy trust by 2030. We are currently exploring options which will enable us to continue to improve and thrive, so the children have the best education possible. We will keep you informed of our progress.
Free school meals
If you are in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible for free school meals for your child. You can apply for this even if your child is in EYFS – Y2 where the children already have a free school meal, as other benefits such as free school trips are available to you. If you would like to see if you are eligible, please click on the link to apply: http://www.southglos.gov.uk/schoolmeals
Tapestry
Many apologies for Tapestry not working this week – we hope to have this rectified as soon as possible.
Governor vacancies
We currently have 1 Governor Vacancy. Please read the message below, from our Chair of Governors Bethan Monis to see if this is something which interests you:
Are you interested in supporting your local community and becoming a school governor?
The Tynings Primary School, located in Staple Hill, is looking for new governors to join the board. We were assessed by Ofsted earlier this year as a Good school and we want to carry on developing and improving, this is your opportunity to support that progression. This is a great opportunity to give something back to your local community and play a part in improving the lives of our children.
Governors do not need to be experts in education, the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active role in the governing body’s work. Governors tend to have enquiring minds, the ability to contribute to debate and the confidence to ask the questions that need to be asked. You will develop transferable skills and learn more about the education system whilst putting existing skills and experience to good use. Full training is available.
The role of school governor is a rewarding voluntary role. Our governor meetings are held in the evenings as this helps to accommodate our members; meetings are currently virtual via Microsoft Teams and the intent going forward is to have a hybrid mix of face to face and virtual. Governors are expected to attend relevant training sessions (currently virtual) and will very occasionally be required to come into the school during the school day.
We are an enthusiastic governing body made up of parents, staff and members of the local community. Whilst no specific skills are required, experience in PR, finance or project management would be especially useful.
If this sounds like something you might like to be part of please get in touch with me for further details - [email protected].
Reminders!
- Please make sure your child’s school jumpers/cardigans have their names in. We have an awful amount of lost property, none of which has a name in which means we can’t return to the owner.
- If you use the front entrance to the school please make sure that you and your children are walking on the pathway, not over our Garden of Hope or over the school car park. Thank you
- Please do not park in the school car park, particularly in the morning when you are dropping children into Breakfast club. This can put your child at risk, as staff are arriving at this time.
- During breakfast club, the kitchen now closes for breakfast at 8.20am
This week sees the return of the class book reviews and it is Falcons and Owls giving their recommendations.
Miss Curtis recommends ‘The Last Bear’ by Hannah Gold
"This book has recently won lots of awards so I was desperate to read what all the fuss and attention was about!
We are thinking about the theme of ‘belonging’ in school at the moment and this book ties in with that theme perfectly. It’s about a young girl who moves, with her dad, to the Arctic Circle – and goes on to forge a friendship with a bear. There’s also an underlying theme of environmental issues.
A fantastic read for anyone in KS2."
Harley from Falcons recommends 'The 26 Storey Treehouse' by Andy Griffiths
"This book is funny as they make up new words and inventions. There are lots of books in the series so if you enjoy it, you can keep reading!
I think people who like reading comics will enjoy this book."
Miss Hudson recommends:
'The Secret of Black Rock' by Joe Todd Stanton
“I love this book because the story always surprises people. At first, people tell lots of horror stories about this mysterious rock in the distance but Erin doesn’t believe them. Later on in the story, she finds out more about the rock and changes everyone’s opinions on it! I read this book to my new class last week and all of the children were so surprised to find that the rock wasn’t a scary rock at all… However, we won’t tell you what it really is in case you decide to read it!”
Darcey from Owls recommends:
'Shouty Arthur' by Angie Morgan
“It’s about playing in the garden. I like it because being outside is my favourite thing to do! I like all the animals he finds in the garden and they have a picnic. They stay awake and go outside at midnight.”
