Dear parents and carers
Your children may come home full of excitement (or upset) today because we went into lockdown and the police arrived. I need to reassure you that everyone was safe at all times, and I have told the children this too in our assembly today. I fully expect that there will be rumours flying around, but no one was hurt and the matter has been dealt with.
I had the pleasure of listening to two of our musicians this week. Zoe and Lucy played their violins beautifully in KS2 assembly and really wowed their audience with their talents. Thank you to both of them for sharing their talents!
Parent Forum
Many thanks to those of you able to attend Parent Forum this morning. We had very interesting discussions around play, swearing, LEAF, parking around school and school budgets!
One outcome was that we will resume our phone calls home if children are heard swearing in school. It is our ambition to try and eradicate use of swear words in school & we would really appreciate it if you supported us with this.
We also talked about parking, particularly around the Jubilee entrance and parking over the admittedly very faint yellow lines and on the corners, thus blocking safe access. We also have a parent who persistently parks over driveways at the front of the school which upsets our very close neighbours. I know that there is limited space around the school, but it is so important that we park safely.
Odd Socks Day!
On a much lighter note, Monday is Odd Socks Day! Please can your children wear odd socks to school on this day as part of our focus on raising awareness about anti-bullying. Assemblies will focus on this, and what children should do if they are being bullied or hear about anyone being bullied.
Inset Days
A reminder that Friday 18th November and Friday 25th November are both inset days, and no children will be in school.
KEVIN THE CARROT
Miss Hannan hereby invites you to get into the spirit of Christmas with us by entering a Christmas raffle with the chance of winning an incredible life-size Kevin the Carrot! He is a whopping 5ft 5 inches tall and comes dressed in his finest! He certainly has the WOW factor and would be a perfect festive addition to any home! The children loved meeting him in assembly today where they were read his story 'The Magic Circus' by Mrs Haydon.
Miss Hannan would like to offer you all the opportunity to win this limited-edition Kevin the Carrot from the 2019 'Greatest Showman' Aldi Christmas range. The cost will be 50p per ticket and proceeds raised from this raffle will be used to purchase some wonderful, new books for our class reading corners. Tickets can be purchased from the outside of Deer class (Year 3) from 3:20pm-3:35pm on Monday 14th-Thursday 17th November and then again on Monday 21st November so that everyone has a chance to purchase them. The winner of the raffle will be announced in assembly on Friday 2nd December.
Thank you in advance for your support and good luck!

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal
As we have done in the past, we will again be supporting The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.
Each year The Salvation Army, Staple Hill organise a Christmas Present Appeal which aims to bring joy to the lives of people who would otherwise have little or nothing under the tree on Christmas morning.
They have requested donations of the following items if you would like to help:
- Brand new gifts for children aged 0 – 18 especially ages over 10
- Brand new gifts for adults
- Non-perishable food to distribute throughout the year as emergency food parcels
- Brand new scarves, hats, gloves, blankets and sleeping bags
- Men’s and women’s toiletries
- They are always happy to accept financial donations to buy items they need!
I need to deliver any donations to The Salvation Army on Thursday 1st December so if you would like to help, please bring your gifts to the office over the next few weeks.
Thank you so much for your support, as always.

Mrs Pike and Kestrel class give their book reviews this week.
A book Mrs Pike really enjoyed reading recently was ‘Leaf’ By Sandra Dieckmann
"It’s about a Polar Bear who had floated to a place far away from home on a piece of melted iceberg. All alone, he tried everything he could to get home. It was only when the other animals stopped being afraid of him and actually helped that he made real progress.
I felt sad as I thought of the effects of Global Warming and I felt sad when I thought about how lonely Leaf must have been in a strange place all alone.
I’m working hard with my family to think about how we can be better protectors of our planet and I hope that if I saw someone alone, I would go and speak to them, make friends with them and help them if I could."
Mr Stanton reviews 'Letters from the Lighthouse' by Emma Carroll
"This book is set in 1941 when the Second World War raged on longer than anyone anticipated. After the death of their father and the disappearance of their sister Sukie, Olive and her brother are evacuated to the coast of Devon. After discovering a strangely coded message that she’s certain has something to do with Sukie’s disappearance, Olive embarks on a dangerous adventure as she’s determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Author Emma Carroll has a wonderful talent for bringing historic events to life for today’s young readers and with 'Letters from the Lighthouse' continues to create an enthralling, thrilling read, whilst introducing situations and characters that are still relevant in our world today. A perfect novel for all KS2 children who are interested in WW2."
Maime from Kestrels enjoys 'the Lost Whale' by Hannah Gold
"'The Lost Whale' is a story about a boy called Rio, whose mum goes into a hospital and so he is sent to live in California with his Grandma. He barely knows her so it is hard. All Rio wants is for his Mum to get better so he can go home! In the meantime he joined a whale watching group and met his new best friend White Beak a whale! This book is perfect for anyone who is interested in animals or the ocean. The book is for older children, about the ages of 10 to 15. I really like the book because it is full of adventure!"
