Dear parents and carers
I hope you are all looking forward to the Christmas Fair this evening – Father Christmas is ready for you! Many thanks in advance, to the PSFA for organising what I am sure will be a fabulous event!
Christmas on the Hill
Tomorrow is Christmas on the Hill in Staple Hill, and at 10.30 our choir will perform carols in the square. They have been practicing hard and sing beautifully – good luck to them, and thank you to Miss Morey and Mrs McNeill for working with the children to get them ready, and for being there to host the children. If you are able to make it, they would love an audience.
Christmas Dinner
A reminder, it is Christmas dinner on Wednesday. Children can say on the day whether or not they are having this, or the veggie option, or they can being a packed lunch in from home. There will not be pasta or baked potatoes available on this day. I can assure you that Lisa cooks a brilliant Christmas dinner! The children can wear something festive with their uniform, and the PSFA have kindly donated crackers and a headwear for everyone.
Salvation Army Donations
An enormous thank you to everyone who was able to donate gifts for the Salvation Army. Mrs Dutton was able to deliver a car full of gifts which we are all very grateful for.
Station Road
I have had two residents of Station Road contact me this week, somewhat disgruntled about the parking on the road. This can easily be avoided if we are considerate about where we park around the school and how we drop off our children. I really do understand how tricky it is to park in the area, and I know many of you would walk to school if you could, but I ask two things of you…
- Please be considerate of our neighbours, by not blocking their driveways or parking on yellow lines
- Think about the safety of children where ever it is you have parked.
Thank you.
The draw for Kevin the Carrot was made during assembly this morning. The lucky winner was Will from Deer class.
An additional bank holiday in honour of the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III will take place on Monday 8 May 2023. As this date had previously been announced as the first day of the 2023 key stage 2 (KS2) test week in England, the KS2 test schedule for next year has been changed
Government ministers have considered the situation carefully and have decided that KS2 tests will take place in the same week with tests following the usual order but each taking place one day later than originally planned. As such, the new schedule will be:
- Tuesday 9 May: English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) papers 1 (questions) and 2 (spelling)
- Wednesday 10 May: English reading paper
- Thursday 11 May: mathematics papers 1 (arithmetic) and 2 (reasoning)
- Friday 12 May: mathematics paper 3 (reasoning)
South Glos Parent Carers will be holding an ADHD online Workshop for parents on the 31st January. Tickets cost £6.50 and the link to book a space is:

Mrs Haydon and Woodpeckers give their book recommendations this week.
Mrs Haydon reviews 'Kid Christmas of the Claus Brothers Toy Shop' by David Litchfield
"I love getting a new Christmas story to share with the school, and 'Kid Christmas of the Claus Brothers Toy Shop' is this year’s purchase. It is beautifully illustrated by David Litchfield ( also the author!) and tells an imaginary story about why we receive Christmas presents. The main character Nicky, notices who comes into the toy shop, and who just peers through the window, and sets out to find out why these children don’t come inside. Once he knows, he enlists his uncles into a great plan which changes the lives of all children. There are happy children, carrots, reindeer and sleighs – what more is there to love in a festive story!"
Mr White recommends 'The Monster Slayer' by Brian Patten
"I have picked this book after the incredible reaction from my class towards it. This gruesome tale is about a village which is being attacked by an ancient monster. In order to defend the city, a slayer is called upon which leads to further issues. Woodpeckers rated this tale 5 stars and so do I!"
Aoiffe from Woodpeckers enjoys 'Invaders & Settlers'
"I really enjoy this book because it is based on History. This book is particularly interesting because it is about the Roman, Saxons and the Vikings. I also particularly enjoyed finding the myth about Grendel which links to our whole class reading book! At the back there is a timeline which tells us about the different invasions!"
