I hope you have had a great week! In school we began the week with an exceptionally positive Local Authority Review on Monday morning. Much of this was done remotely, but there was also some observing of teaching in EYFS and Y1 classes, which was particularly strong. Thanks to all of the staff who were involved in this intense scrutiny of the school – we continue to make great strides in improving outcomes for our learners and being ready for our next inspection!
Congratulations!
To Mrs Davis, who is now the proud mum of Isla Rose – she finally turned up on October 1st at 15.15 and she is beautiful! Sending much love to her and her family from all of us!
To Mr and Mrs Mundy, who completed their Bristol Three Peaks challenge. They chose a beautiful day for their challenge, raising £793 for St Peter’s Hospice.
To Mrs Dutton, who ran the virtual 2020 London Marathon last weekend raising money for The Staple Hill Community Hub, who work to improve the quality of life for people in Staple Hill. She then came into school looking her usual bright and breezy self on Monday! Brilliant running Mrs Dutton!
PSFA AGM
The PSFA do sterling work raising funds to help school provide ‘extras’ for our children. This has obviously been made much more complicated this year, but they have persevered, and supported us through lockdown by supplementing the food we provided for some families. Their AGM is taking place on Tuesday at 7.30pm via zoom. Everyone is welcome to attend – please register your interest by emailing [email protected] Bring your amazing ideas for fundraising in times of a pandemic!
Harvest
Just a quick reminder to bring your donations for the Food Bank for our Harvest into school by Wednesday 14th October, if you are able too. Don’t forget, if you are in need of Food Bank vouchers, we can provide you with these from school.
Online Learning/ bubble or school closures.
In the event of bubble closure or lockdown or individual’s isolating, we have to have a plan in place to provide continuing education for all our children, with the expectation from government that if we don’t do this, we could be fined. As parents, you are obliged to take this learning offer up to support your children in their learning should they be at home, but we know this can be tricky for some of our parents. We will be using Google Classroom to ensure that we are able to communicate with you and your children, and will send you details of this once we have completed a trial we are running with one of our Y6 classes. There will be daily activities for the children to do for maths and English, as well as two items of ‘topic’ work, but we do not expect children to do all of this at a computer/tablet/phone as we are conscious of children spending too much time in front of screens. More details will be sent out next week about how all of this will work.
This week's book recommendations come from Kingfisher class and Mrs Haydon.
Miss Davies recommends the book ‘Little people, Big dreams' by Rosa Parks, as it is an extremely informative book which allows you to learn about the life of a lady called Rosa Parks who grew up in Alabama, America. She achieved incredible things! Rosa Parks was extremely brave, resilient and determined as she never stopped working for equal rights. As it is black history month, this book is a must read! This book highlights the fact that we all belong and that we are all unique and special individuals.
Phillip recommends 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl! This book is about a boy called Charlie who, after a long wait, finally finds the last golden ticket which leads him to a chocolate factory! Phillip recommends this book because Charlie persevered with his task and is really determined to find the last golden ticket. This book is suitable for any chocolate lovers and anyone who likes adventure books!
5/5 stars from Phillip!
Mrs Haydon's recommendation:
"Many of the children know that one of my favourite picture books is 'Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy' by Lynley Dodd. I loved reading it to my own children when they were younger and i still love reading it to classes or even the whole school. It has brilliant rhyme and repetition which encourages everyone to join in, and of course it contains a character called Schnitzel Von Krumm (with the very low tum) a dachshund, who reminds me of my own sausage dog Maizie. Lynley Dodd has written may other stories about Hairy Maclary, Scarface Claw and Schnitzel Von Krumm which are just as good to read together."
