Dear parents/carers
Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all! This week, the children have settled back into school beautifully and have been enjoying getting to know more about their new topics for this term.
As you can see, we are now using our ‘Schoolzine’ app as our main method of communication; it will hold the newsletter, text messages and emails and we will no longer be using the teachers to parents text service. This might cause a problem for those who have not yet downloaded the app! We are working on ensuring that everyone has access to this. Year group newsletters will now be written into the website, with teachers also adding in the current learning – once they have all had a training session on how to do this. Ms Masters is in the process of doing this with everyone over the next few weeks. In the meantime, thank you for your patience whilst we work to get everything up and running properly!
Staffing news: Before Christmas, Rod Atwell, our school caretaker resigned from his post – we wish him all the very best for his future and thank him for the work he has done over the past 8 years as caretaker of our school. I am delighted to tell you that we have appointed a new caretaker, Mr Jeremy Mundy, who will begin his role at the end of January. Everyone is ‘mucking in’ at the moment to cover opening, locking up and cleaning the school, particularly Mrs Mundy (thank you!) and once again can I ask for your patience when mishaps such as the gates not being unlocked on time occur!

A reminder that children are expected to be in their correct school uniform for both ‘normal’ days and PE days. On forest school days, children should wear their school uniform and bring in suitable weather-proof clothing to change into.
Christmas Jumper Appeal
Do you have any Christmas Jumpers which your children have grown out of, that would be a suitable size for children in our school? We are looking to have a small collection of jumpers which parents can purchase cheaply, in order to have a wider number of children have access to Christmas Jumper day. Do you have any that you would like to recycle? If we have enough, we will have a stall at the next Christmas fair for you to be able to buy jumpers at a very reduced cost. Thank you.
If anyone has any unwanted cushions or blankets at home, we would appreciate them for our new outdoor reading area.
Please can you bring to the main school office. Thank you.
What a great start to the new term with children enjoying the grounds looking for signs of new life, creating a new band and finding different uses for things. It's really muddy out there and although the children love it, clothes do not. Please make sure your child has waterproof clothes and wellies where possible to ensure they get the best out of their sessions. We have some spares but not many. If you find your child no longer needs their waterproofs or wellies as they've grown out of them, we would really appreciate any spares. Thank you in advance.
Classes for next week are,
Monday Deer
Tuesday Woodpeckers and Squirrels
Wednesday Rabbits and Otters
EYFS had a dinosaur explorers WOW day to kick start their new topic about "Our Planet". We had amazing fun raising questions about the dinosaur egg that appeared in our curiosity cube on Wednesday morning!
This term we will be trialling this new resource in PSHE lessons.
British Red Cross. Life. Live it.
It is a web-based, free teaching resource from the British Red Cross. It enables primary school staff to deliver first aid education to pupils and it gives them the tools and information they need to feel comfortable in doing so.
Life. Live it. Is designed for pupils aged 5-11 at all primary stages and it emphasises the simple skills that pupils need to know. The key messages of the teaching resource are as follows:
- Simple actions can make a difference.
- Anyone can learn to give first aid in different situations.
- Life. Live it: will enable children to feel confident that they can help.
- If children are confident, they will be inspired to help.
Using a combination of interactive activities, film scenarios, information sheets and quizzes, Life. Live it: aims to build a generation of life-savers through increasing young people’s ability, confidence and willingness to give first aid. Furthermore, they will learn the importance of giving first aid without risk to themselves.
If you would like any more information contact Mrs Symons, PSHE co-ordinator. We are hoping this will become part of our Health Education scheme.
Each week, we will be giving book recommendations. There will be one from an EYFS/KS1 child and one from a KS2 child plus book recommendations from staff.
Amelie in Kingfisher class said: "I think you should read 'How to break a dragon's heart' by Cressida Cowell because it is about a boy who embarks on an adventure. I am really enjoying reading it."
Miss Curtis' choice: "'I am the seed that grew the tree' is a beautifully illustrated book with a nature poem for each day of the year. We are enjoying sharing it in Kingfisher Class."
Miss Hannan's choice: "I would recommend the book 'Pattan's Pumpkin' to any children who have not read it. It has beautiful pictures and powerful description. Deer class have loved reading it."
Charlie from Deer class said: "I would recommend 'The Stick Man', because it is exciting and some parts are really funny. I think Year 1 children would love it!
Attendance for the last week of Term 2
Total attendance for the week: 94.2%
Best class attendance: Woodpecker 99.1%
Best house attendance: Rodway 95.2%
A disappointing end to the term, with whole school attendance falling into red. There were only 3 green classes, with 2 amber and 9 red. Please let's make the start of Term 3 a green one, with lots of classes having 100% attendance!
