Dear parents / carers
This newsletter contains important information about lockdown or bubble closure plans, as well as behaviour – please take the time to read it!
We are facing a time when the number of local cases is increasing, and we have had a confirmed case of covid in a parent. This family is, of course, isolating. However, knowledge of this does increase anxiety amongst yourselves and staff, so instead of suggesting that you wear a mask when on site, I would now like to ask you to wear one for the safety of everyone. Please wear a mask when dropping off and picking up your children. Thank you.
Bubble closure or lockdown procedures.
For children in EYFYS and Y1 you should have a login to Tapestry to be able to communicate with your class teacher and vice versa. Children in Y2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, will today come home with their login for Goggle classroom. We would like you to follow the instructions and set up this up over the weekend please, so that we can test and see who is having difficulty. As I mentioned last week, the government expectations are very different to the previous lockdown, and children will be expected to learn from home much more formally, so we need to check that Google Classroom works for you. Next week’s spellings will also come via Google classroom. Once you set it up, leave a message for the class teacher! If you have difficulties please let the class teacher know so that we can support you. There are also some useful YouTube clips available online.
Incidentally, we don’t have any inside information about a possible lockdown, but we do know that we have to have our remote learning offer available by October 22nd. Should a lockdown occur, we will not be setting work over the half term break.
Staffing news.
I am delighted to welcome Kate Andrews to the EYFS team, and Ewelina Nowinska to the Y5 team. Kate will be replacing Mrs Savage, and Ewelina replaces Mrs BG. We look forward to working with them when they start after half term.
We are still collecting for gifts for Mrs Savage/Mrs BG. If you would like to contribute to these please send money in a sealed envelope to the office. As you know, Mrs Savage has worked at The Tynings for 29 years, looking after many children and their families; we would like to give her a great send off!
Children’s behaviour in school.
Our Positive Relationships Policy, and our Severe Behaviour Policy are both available to read on the website. We are really pleased with how the vast majority of children returned to school and settled back in well, but we are very aware (like most schools in South Glos) that the honeymoon period is over! With such a long school term, tiredness is also having an impact on general behaviour as everyone becomes more fractious with each other. A number of children are taking up a disproportionate amount of time in school, and for this we need your help and support – managing the behaviour of children should be a partnership between home and school.
I wanted to draw your attention to what we do regarding poor behaviour, in particular. Much of this is done ‘behind the scenes’ and so it can sometimes feel to the children that nothing is being done if an issue has arisen. We find that a quiet word with a child is infinitely more effective than shouting at someone, and this is what we do. This is often followed by a conversation with a parent at the end of the day, or for more persistent issues, a child may be placed ‘on report’ where they have to meet with a member of the leadership team daily to closely monitor their behaviour. For bigger issues, we also enlist the help of the behaviour support team and the inclusion team at the local authority, and focus on specific intervention programmes. I need to stress that exclusion is a very last resort – I have excluded three children for 1-2 days already this term, and this is not something I wish to continue with as it is not proven to have a huge impact on children’s behaviour, particularly where there are specific needs. As I have said, much of this approach is invisible to other children, and it takes time, but please be reassured that we are working really hard to support both children who find behaviour difficult, and the children who may bear the brunt of some of these difficulties. We will always spend time taking to any children who are ‘victims’ of poor behaviour, helping them feel safe in school.
Please can you remind your children that our three rules of being ready, respectful and safe apply to everyone.
Parent consultations
These will take place after half term, and on this occasion, will be phone calls rather than face to face meetings. Please look out for further information coming soon.
A massive thank you to all the parents for such generous donations to the Resound North Bristol food bank.
We know with your support we can help the next families in crisis. The staff have been overwhelmed by the amount of goods received. Mrs Haydon and Mrs Symons will be delivering it to Resound on Tuesday 20th October. Thank you once again.
This week's book recommendations come from Otter & Owl classes.
Miss Thomas from Otters recommends:
"I have loved reading 'Holes' by Louis Sachar to my class this term. It’s the story of Stanley, a boy living in America who gets wrongly accused of stealing a pair of trainers. He is sent to Camp Green Lake where boys who have misbehaved are forced to dig huge holes in the blistering sun every day to teach them a lesson. However, when Stanley meets the mysterious warden who is in charge of the camp, he realises that there might be another reason that the boys are digging every day. It is a fantastic story filled with humour, friendship, twists and turns and a great sub-plot set one hundred years in the past. A must read!"
Riley says:
"I really like 'Ratburger' by David Walliams and I have told all my friends to read the book. I like it when Zoe tries to save the rat with her Dad and when Bert showed Zoe he had no eyes. It’s a weird but interesting book!"
Mrs McNeill says:
"I would like to recommend. ‘My Cat likes to hide in boxes’ by Eve Sutton.
I have read it to my class several times now and they love it! They enjoy the book because it is very repetitive and they are able to read the story with me. There is lots of rhyme, which the children love and it is very funny. The illustrations are colourful and really enhance the story. The children get excited when it mentions lots of different countries and they like to use different voices as we read."
Ted from Owl class would like to recommend ‘Augustus and his smile’ by Catherine Rayner. It has been one of our class books this term and he has enjoyed learning the story with the class. He loves the book because it has lots of exciting adjectives in it and Augustus searches in a variety of different places for his smile. He especially likes it when Augustus finds his smile at the end.
