Dear parents / carers
I would like to begin with a huge thank you to you all this week, for wearing face masks when you drop off and collect your children – I cannot tell you how much all of the staff appreciate this. Thank you for being so supportive. From MONDAY, we would like to trial Y2 children coming into school at 8.45 and ending at 3.10 (the ‘usual’ school day.) You are so good at coming in, dropping off and then leaving that we feel we might be able to make this work to remove the waiting times and congestion on the infant side of the building. Feedback would be much appreciated as we try this out.
Thanks also for the manner in which your children have returned to school this week. Everyone is happy and smiling, and incredibly calm throughout the school. It is really heart-warming to have seen the children take part in different immersion events this week, from carving soap and creating woolly mammoths in Year 3, making predictions about Pattan’s Pumpkin in Year 2, making sparklers in EYFS and Y1, creating volcanoes in Year 4 and rainforests in Y5, and not forgetting Year 6 who have begun their World War Two topic by making Anderson shelters.
A good number of children have made some fantastic posters over half term for the competition to create a poster to remind everyone about staying safe. They will be judged on Monday, and prizes will be handed out next week. We then intend to photocopy them and have them up around school. I am really impressed with them!
Mrs Savage
This week we said goodbye to Mrs Savage. As you know, Mrs Savage has been at The Tynings for 29 years, and has now decided to retire. Thank you to those who contributed to her collection. Mrs Savage was presented with a beautiful painting of the ‘Tynings Tree’ by Bristol artist Jenny Urquhart, a retirement hamper full of goodies which we know Mrs Savage will enjoy in her retirement, and vouchers to spend in one of her favourite wool shops. We miss Mrs Savage very much, and can’t wait for the day when she comes back as a volunteer helper!
Mrs Haydon has visited classrooms with poppies this week & the children have enthusiastically put their money into the tin. We also have some beautiful Year 6 art work on our remembrance display.
Unfortunately, this year due to the pandemic, the normal Remembrance Day services cannot take place. Instead, a whole service has been filmed over the past few weeks featuring several people/groups and has been put together to create a virtual Remembrance service for people to watch online.
One of our Year 4 pupils, Ronnie, was selected to represent his Cub/Scout troop, the 78th Kingswood and was filmed laying a wreath at the Cenotaph for Remembrance Day.
This week, the book recommendations come from Foxes and Pine Martens.
Mr Mead recommends the book, ‘Dare to Be You’ by Matthew Syed because it teaches us to be confident and believe in ourselves which is so important and also to achieve our full potential.
"A truly moving wartime novel. This book follows the journey of two young brothers, looking back over their lives, before they go over the top. It’s an incredible mixture of bravery, courage and the power of family. A must read for KS2 children!"
Alexcia from Pine Martens:
"I would recommend the book 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' by Kate DiCamillo. Our class really enjoyed this text as the characters are very realistic and recognisable."
As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, this November we are taking part in a competition for Maths Week England. It’s called Rock Out 2020 and it’s all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.
For every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, your child will earn their class a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours). Winning classes in the school and in the country as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.
All game modes (Gig, Garage, Studio, etc.) will count but only from games played between 7.30am and 7.30pm on Monday 9th, Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th.
In the spirit of the competition, please don’t play on their behalf but by all means encourage and support them to the extent that it doesn’t cause high stress levels or impact on family plans. We suggest a limit of half an hour a day outside school hours – some will play more, some will play less.
Thanks for your support.
