Dear parents/carers
This week has been full of colour monsters, and each class now has a display which they will use to help children to manage their feelings, some of which are here:
School values
In our assemblies, we have been discussing school values. The children in KS1 and EYFS were asked what a Tynings child should be, and in KS2 we asked what values do we live by. They came up with a number of really important values:
From this heart full of words, each class chose their top 3 which they feel should be important to us as a school, and we would like your help in whittling these words down to 3 or 4 key values, that you feel the school should promote with your children. We will be consulting staff and governors to get their opinion too. Please select words from this list below which are important to you, and email them for the attention of Mrs Haydon. Thank you.
Please choose from these words: (not all of these are values, but they are important to the children)

Children in Need
Thank you for your donations last week for our Children in Need non-uniform day. We raised a fabulous £380!
INSET DAYS
Now that we have secured the training we wanted for this year, I am able to let you know that the remaining date for our 5 inset days has been set. This will be on Monday 4th January, when staff will be undertaking safeguarding updates and work on developing vocabulary with our children.
The remaining Inset days are
Monday 4th January
Friday 12th February
Friday 25th June
Staffing
Mrs Jen Hopkins will be leaving us before Christmas, to take up an exciting new post at the Avanti Garden School in Fishponds. She is really looking forward to using their yoga room and kiln! We will miss Mrs Hopkins terribly, but wish her the very best of luck in her new adventure.
Miss Trish Page will take up the role of Year 4 teaching assistant from January, and we are currently advertising for a special needs assistant to take up the sterling work Miss Page has done with children in Year 5.
Christmas Lunch
We are lucky enough to be the only school where Aspens are providing a school Christmas dinner this year. This will be on Wednesday 9th December. The PFSA have provided crackers and will be decorating the hall so that we can make this as special as possible for the children. It would be brilliant to have as many children as possible taking this up for the usual cost of a school meal. Please let the office know, via email by Tuesday 24th, if your child would like a Christmas lunch.
Salvation Army Christmas Appeal 2020
We have been supporting the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal for the last few years, providing Christmas presents for children in our area. If you would like to donate either a brand new gift (suitable for children aged 0-11), or money please hand them into the office by Monday 30th November. Unfortuantely, this is a very short time frame, so we thank you in advance for any donations.
Calling all Tynings' scientists and engineers, we have a very special Christmas challenge for you. Please see the attached letter for more details. We can't wait to see what you come up with.

To encourage the use of Mathletics this year, we have some exciting maths gifts ready to award the children which have been kindly paid for by the PSFA. They include maths rulers, pencils and rubbers. The children will receive one of these gifts for each Silver Mathletics Certificate they receive. In order to achieve a silver certificate, the children must obtain 5 bronze certificates and for four silver certificates, they earn a gold certificate. When a gold certificate is earned, the children receive an enamel Mathlete badge.
Therefore, there are three gifts available for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd silver certificates, as the fourth silver certificate means the child receives a gold certificate and badge at that point. Please encourage your child/children to use Mathletics as much as they can to support their mathematical knowledge and understanding.
As you will already know, reading is something we are very passionate about at the Tynings! Miss Hudson and Miss Hannan have been working hard to create weekend reading bags for each class in the school. One child from each class will take this bag home every Friday to enjoy a story at home over the weekend with a tasty treat. We would like to thank the PSFA for kindly providing all the hot chocolate and biscuits for these bags!
This week, the book reviews come from Hedgehogs and Woodpeckers.
Mrs English says:
"I recommend 'Geronimo' by David Walliams. With a little help from his dad and friends, baby Geronimo discovers that even the wildest of dreams can come true. A delightfully topsy-turvy book with an uplifting message about following your dreams. It has fun and engaging illustrations too!"
Isabel from Hedgehogs likes 'Whatever Next!' By Jill Murphy.
"I like this book because it has a pretend rocket. Baby bear wants to go to the moon. He has a picnic on the moon too! Also I found some of my tricky words in the book."
Mr Griffiths recommends 'Absolutely Everything. A history of Earth, dinosaurs, rulers, robots and other things too numerous to mention' by Christopher Lloyd.
"This is a fantastic non-fiction book full of weird and wonderful facts about the world starting from 13.8 billion years ago and ending in the present day. It covers what happened, when it happened, where it happened and what happened at the same time. The author delivers interesting facts through diagrams, timelines, cartoons and explanations. He even poses questions to the reader to deepen their understanding, which sometimes completely changes how you think about a certain piece of information. This is a great read for anyone with an inquisitive mind."
"This book is all about 3 demi gods, one demi god is missing and they are searching for the Greek Goddess of marriage. I like this book because the Greek gods are really interesting and I love how they are described. The author also makes the story seem really real in your mind!"
