Dear parents/carers,
Hopefully you will have seen our messages this week requesting items for our outdoor library; this is one of our initiatives for this year to really try and encourage a love of reading in all of our children.
You may also have seen that we are introducing a weekly stay and read session, and reading cafes to invite you in to share books with your children. Recent research indicates that getting children to read frequently and fluently can have a real impact upon a child’s future, which is one of the reasons why we want to raise the profile of reading for pleasure; another is that we all really love books and reading!
You will also see weekly recommendations from children and staff within the SZapp newsfeed. We would love to hear your recommendations too, and of course, for you to read with your children as often as possible. Many thanks to Miss Curtis, Miss Hannan and Miss Hudson for taking on the challenge of promoting reading for all.
Lois Haydon, Head Teacher
Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on school premises, even if they are being held/carried. Thank you for your co-operation.
Also, scooters/bikes should not be riden on school premises at any time. This is for everyone's safety. Please can parents/carers ensure their children are aware of this? Thank you.
Thank you to all parents who have been paying dinner money online on a Monday, for the dinners for that week. There are procedures for late/arrears dinner monies which have been updated, these are:
- If no money has been paid online by Thursday parents will be contacted by the schoolzine app to remind them they need to pay the dinner money online.
- If arrears go over £10 parents will be advised that no lunch will be provided and that a sandwich lunch must be provided by the parent until the arrears monies have been paid
We hope you understand the updated procedures of collecting dinner money and would like to reassure parents that if you have any difficulty in paying please come to the office. We are here to help! We would also like parents to know that if a child came to school with no lunch, one would be given to them.
Thank you
Mrs Mundy
After reading ‘Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish’ by Michael Foreman, we decided to put our coats, gloves and wellies on and go outside to find any litter around our school.
When we spotted rubbish, we picked it up and put it straight in the bin. We discussed how keeping our environment clean is good for us, plants and animals. In particular, the Tynings Squirrels!
We hope that when you spot any litter, you will pick it up too!
Thank you!
Squirrel Class
EYFS parents & carers, are warmly invited to our "Time to Read" event on Wednesday 5th February from 1.30 until 3.00.
This annual event celebrates a love of reading and your child will receive a free book pack from Book Start. We greatly look forward to this event and it promises to be fun for both you and your child!
Please let one of the EYFS team know that you can attend, so we know how many resources to create for the day.
This week, Radio 2's 500 word competition was launched. This is a great opportunity for children (between the ages of 5-13) to show off their imaginative and creative side! Entries need to be submitted online by Thursday 27th February.
Miss Curtis will be running a lunchtime club on Thursdays this term (starting Thursday 23rd January) for children to work on their entries on laptops.
There are some great prizes on offer including 500 books for our school.

In the words of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall "Keep saying a big fat YES to adventure".
Rose from Owl class recommends "The Tiny Seed":
“I love this book called The Tiny Seed because all the seeds go travelling and one of the seeds grows into a beautiful plant.”
Mrs Davis says:
“I love the book The Smartest Giant in Town because it is about kindness and how you can help people who are in need.”
Layla from Otters class recommends "The boy at the back of the class":
"I am currently reading 'The boy at the back of the class by Onjali Q. Raúf. It's a very funny book and is all about an empty seat in a classroom. A new boy joins the class and it turns out that he has ran away from the war. Three friends are trying to make him feel welcome but at the moment, he doesn't speak much English. I'm looking forward to getting to know the characters more! I would recommend this fiction book to children aged 8 to 11."
Miss Hudson says:
"I would like to recommend The Wind Singer by William Nicholson to children in Years 5 and 6. I read this book when I was in Year 5 and it is still one of my favourites now! It is about a family that live in a city where you have to take exams to determine where you live. If your family scores highly, you are moved to a more affluent district. When a young girl, Kestrel, rebels and gets her family in trouble, she has to go on a mission to restore Aramanth's trust in her family... Some pages are quite humorous but as you get to know the characters, you find yourself rooting for the family's success!"
The Great British weather did its best to stop us having fun this week but the rain and wind didn't hold us back! It just provided us with more opportunities to have fun outdoors.
The search for water proved interesting, finding it in strange places. Our year 4 children decided to be scientists and have a go at filtering the dirty water.
Squirrel class had great fun in the wind pretending to be leaves and we all tried to spot the new signs of life in our grounds. Lots of flowers and new buds appearing.
Who knows what we'll be getting up to next week!
Again, any old wellies donated would be much appreciated.
