Dear parents/carers
It’s been a bit of a struggle this week for many of us; the emotional toll of this lockdown seems to be heavier and I don’t think the weather earlier in the week helped! But I can see blue sky out of my window today, and it’s Friday – I hope you all feel a little bit refreshed by this. Please keep going – we know it is hard, but we really do appreciate everything you do, whether you are working on home learning or are a keyworker and having to go to work yourself.
Catch-up Friday
We have had a look at how we can perhaps reduce some of the stress for everyone, and from next week are introducing ‘Catch-up Friday.’ Teachers will now set a maths problem and a free write task for the morning, which you can choose to do or you can choose to spend time catching up with home learning from the week. Please do one or the other (ie catch-up time or the tasks, but not both!) In the afternoon, we have set some ‘Thank Goodness it’s Friday’ challenges for you to enjoy. (See link below) Please feel free to tweak these or do something completely different – we would love to see photographs of what you get up to! This is intended to support you all; children in school will also do the maths and free write tasks, and have some choice to their learning in the afternoon to match what is going on at home.

Just a further note on remote learning – the teachers are giving feedback on google classroom, but are worried that sometimes you are not able to see it. Please can you check you are receiving this?
Lateral flow testing
From next week, all of the school staff will have to test themselves for coronavirus twice weekly. This has been set by the government, who are aiming to pick up those who are asymptomatic. At the moment there are no plans to do the same with children. However, this testing could have an impact on our bubbles as we obviously may need to close them if anyone tests positive.

Bristol Sport began running a Netball Development Hub at the beginning of the academic year for those children interested in developing their skills and knowledge whilst also meeting new people and having fun.
Due to the current situation we all find ourselves in, the Netball Development Hub is unable to go ahead. Bristol Sport have taken this opportunity to develop an exciting new programme called NetHiit. NetHiit is thier brand new community netball programme that incorporates all aspects of netball into a workout that can be done at home. The sessions consist of both high intensity interval training and core workouts with a netball twist. The NetHiit sessions will take place every Thursday evening at 6pm, on Zoom, throughout lockdown. These sessions are open to children in years 3 – 10. Each session will be around 45 minutes long, including a warm up and cool down. The first 2 sessions are free and then there is a small fee of £2 per session thereafter.
Please see the attached poster for more information.

Book recommendations return this week and it is the turn of Deer and Kestrels.
Miss Hannan recommends the book 'Traction Man' by Mini Grey.
"This is an excellent picture book for those who like adventure and action, I would especially recommend this to boys in Key Stage 1. Traction man patrols the house in his stylish and perfectly accessorized outfits, he is well prepared for any occasion, such as saving toys or damsels in distress. When he is presented with an all-in-one knitted green romper suit and matching bonnet by his owner's granny, he must overcome the humiliation of his new look and rediscover the action hero within him! If you get the chance, this one is definitely well worth a read!"
"I loved reading ‘The Girl of Ink and Stars’ which I know some of Kestrels class enjoyed too. It’s the story of Isabella Riosse who lives on the island of Joya. They are unable to venture beyond their small township but when her friend disappears into the island's Forgotten Territories, Isabella volunteers to guide the search. Isabella is an interesting and brave character who yearns for adventure. It is a fantastic story full of exploration, mystery, twists and turns and it even has small links to the well-known Disney film, ‘Moana’. A must read!"
"It's got lots of different elements; magic, mystery, sport, action, suspense and humour all feature in this fabulous book. You don't have to have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (the first book in the series) but it draws together threads from the previous book so you may want to read that first. Be prepared - this book is so enjoyable it will make you want to read all the Harry Potter books in the series. I would suggest you read the book before you see the film because the description in the book paints a very vivid picture in your mind.
This book is easy to read. There are not many large words so I would say that it is suitable for children in Year 4 upwards."
