Dear parents/ carers
A number of children have being watching the news recently and have been concerned by the plight of animals caught up in the Australian bushfires. Zoe, Michael, George and James have all asked for a non-uniform day to raise money for the WWF Australia Bushfire Emergency fund. Therefore, this coming Friday – 31st January, will be non-uniform. This can have an Australian theme, for those who are able to dress up, but non-uniform is very welcome. As usual, for those who have PE on this day, please can they wear clothing suitable for activity and exercise, or bring in their PE kit. We will collect donations and send them off to the WWF as requested by the children. Thank you
Disappointingly, we have had another scooter stolen early this week, and I had to chase two people off the school grounds on Tuesday. One was recognised, and we have reported this to the police. Thank you to all those who now make sure they have bikes and scooters locked up if parking at the front of the school. Please can I urge everyone to be extra careful – put bikes/scooters in the racks at the top of the playground if you are unable to lock them up - and to continue to be extra vigilant, particularly if there are unfamiliar teenagers on site. Your support in this is very much appreciated.
Lois Haydon, Head Teacher
A London based TV Production Company called Lion TV; creators of popular shows like Horrible Histories, Homes under the Hammer and Inside the Tower of London are currently in production on Series 2 of their hit CBBC show Step Up To The Plate.
The show sees top chef Allegra McEvedy and service expert Fred Sirieix challenge children to run their own restaurant, both in the kitchen and front of house, with the two most successful contestants being crowned Head Chef and Maître D’ respectively.
The first series was a great success and showcased some incredibly talented chefs and wonderfully warm service staff. Episodes and clips can be found on iPlayer and at the programme homepage: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0007lkh
They are now casting children in school years 5 – 9 for the next series. Kitchen Crew members need to have a passion for food, a sound knowledge of ingredients and an ability to keep cool when it gets hot in the kitchen. The Restaurant Crew need to be organised, welcoming and calm throughout the chaos of service.

There is guidance on the website for what will happen when you child bumps their head at school. This can be accessed via the following link:
What a magical start to the week! The children spent lots of time searching for hidden ice around the area, they then filled containers with water and natural materials for the next days classes to wonder over. We had frost angels aplenty across the field and curiosity about the tracks left behind as they ran around. Our younger children have been creatively constructing a tower and ladder system to enable them to reach some of the branches in our trees. By Wednesday the frost had cleared and the mud was wetter than ever, but a big thank you to Hedgehog and Pine Marten class as most of them had appropriate clothing and were able to fully enjoy their outdoor experience.
A quick plea, we are desperately short of spare wellies and would appreciate any donations of outgrown pairs.
Next weeks classes are:
Monday – Deer
Tuesday – Woodpeckers and Squirrels
Wednesday – Rabbits and Otters
This week the recommendations are from Hedgehogs & Falcons.
Zac from Hedgehogs says:
'My favourite part in "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson, is where they fly down to the ground'
Mrs Weeks recommends ‘Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish’ by Michael Foreman.
‘The children loved hearing about the dinosaurs and quickly picked up the message that we have to look after our planet.'
Jack from Falcons says:
'I love the Harry Potter books because they’re full of suspense. If you like the movies, read the books because they’re even better!'
Miss Thomas recommends "The Miraculous journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo for Years 4, 5 & 6.
'The main character, Edward, is toy rabbit who has a very high opinion of himself! His owner adores him completely but he does not return her love as he is self-centred and heartless. However, when an accident results in him being separated from his owner, he goes on a thrilling journey meeting many interesting people and Edward starts to see things quite differently... This book is both funny and moving and the ending always brings a tear to my eye'.
Total attendance for the week: 96.6%
Best class attendance: Hedgehogs 100%
Best house attendance: Eastleigh 96.9%
