Dear parents and carers
It’s been a rollercoaster of a term! We can see that the children have settled back into school after the second big lockdown, and are full steam ahead with our recovery from this, and towards the end of the academic year. I hope you and your children have a good break and are able to enjoy the sunshine that we are promised!
School uniform
Mrs Masters and myself met with a representative from Monkhouse Schoolwear specialists this week. We needed to be confident that supplies will be readily available for September, and that our new logo would be on everything. We also discussed the locality of their stores and how this might impact on our parents.
Monkhouse talked about the supply chain, and how covid and the Suez canal blockage have impacted upon current orders; Mrs Masters and I were reassured that this will be overcome ready for you to purchase uniform for the next academic year. Stock is already being prepared – but it does come from abroad and so has to be shipped.
We were advised that stores are operating on an appointment only basis for the time being, but that online shopping is available for delivery. I would certainly recommend that you organise this in June / July, not August! We have decided to continue to use Monkhouse as our provider, having been reassured of the service and quality, and that our new logo will be on all stock from now on. This will mean a wait for orders you place now, but they will be with you for September.

Managing difficult behaviour
As a school, we believe in making sure children are praised publicly, and reprimanded privately. This sometimes means that there is a belief that we do not do anything about poor behaviour. This is certainly not the case, but we do not give out third party information about children (and cannot legally.) The senior leadership team are always on hand to diffuse any incidents of poor behaviour, and for speaking to parents. For some children this might mean a weekly meeting with parents & for others it can be a ‘one off.’ For serious incidents there might be an exclusion, and very rarely (here, and in other schools) a permanent exclusion. We sometimes use mentoring for children who are engaged in poor behaviour, or those who are ‘victims’ of poor behaviour. This might be via Mrs Poole, the senior leadership team, or via external providers such as Breakthrough Mentoring or Impact Mentoring. This mentoring provides very intense work with individuals, and can be in school or off site.
As ever, if you have any concerns about your own child please come and see myself, Mrs Berger or Mrs Poole. (Rather than share your views via social media where we can’t do anything to help you!) Please remember that we cannot share information about other children with you and that complaints are dealt with confidentially. Thank you
This week we have covered 3544 laps 708,800m, 443miles. That is the same as 14,160 Olympic swimming pools.
In total, we have covered 14,907 laps, 298,1400m, 1863miles This means we are nearly to Kazakhstan and are 1/3 of the way to Tokyo.
Any walking or running that the children do over the half term counts towards our total, so please let the school know of any distances covered.
Please see the attached flyer from Hanham Abbotonians football club.
This week it is the turn of Falcons and Owls to give their book reviews.
Miss Curtis recommends ‘Crater Lake’ by Jennifer Killick
"My daughter has recently been a reluctant reader – this book managed to change her opinion on how amazing reading can be. We read it together in two days!
It’s full of suspense, horror and humour. It starts with a Year 6 residential trip to Crater Lake that goes horribly wrong. The reader is told that when the pupils fall asleep they turn into bug-eyed victims of some alien race that is in Crater Lake.
It also touches on friendship and camaraderie – a very important part of being on a residential.
It is mildly scary so I would recommend it to Year 5 or Year 6 children (though don’t read it before our PGL!). The second book in the series has just been published so if you enjoy it you know there is another!"
Ronnie's recommendation is ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C S Lewis
"I love this book as the language in it is very good. I love the plot twists so I am not sure what will happen next. The setting is amazing and you can really picture where the story is set.
I recommend it to Year 5 or 6 children."
"I would like to recommend this book because I love to read any book by Nick Butterworth and Percy the Park Keeper is my favourite character! He is kind, helpful and he has many friends. My class really enjoy this book because the animals try to trick Percy but their plan doesn’t quite work. I also love to read about happy characters enjoying the outdoors. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and make me want to visit a park."
Archie from Owl class enjoys 'Mad About Minibeasts' by Giles Andreae & David Wojtowycz
Archie enjoys this book because he loves minibeasts. His favourite poem is the one about a Dragonfly because the dragonfly has shimmering wings and dazzling green skin! He has fun reading the poems in front of the class.
