Dear parents and carers
What a week! It is lovely to have the children in school and for the weather to be so good (mostly) but so very disappointing to have had to close classes due to Covid. I really thought we were through the worst of this! I have added some reminders to this newsletter just so that we can all remember what the procedures are.
BRILLIANT NEWS!
Lilly in Kingfishers has ‘braved the shave’ this week, raising over £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support – a fantastic charity! We are so proud of Lilly in her endeavours and her whole class were excited for the ‘grand reveal’ that took place on Wednesday morning. Here’s a very happy and delighted Lilly showing off her ‘after’ look. It’s not too late to sponsor Lilly if you would like to, using this link https://bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk/shavers/lilly-powell
This week we have also uncovered a budding artist in Hannah from Bats class! Hannah enjoyed the activities set during lockdown so much, that she now spends time observing YouTube guides to learn how to draw different birds and animals. We are really impressed with her woodpecker – inspired by our own resident woodpecker living in the Tynings tree.
MAD Olympiad
We were hoping to have the MAD Olympiad take place this year despite covid. I am pleased to say that there will be a Key Stage 2 session, where we will take a group of children to Pomphrey Hill to compete with other schools in the area. Sadly, we are unable to invite parents to this event.
The Year 2 event has been postponed and will now take place in Term 1 of the next academic year when these children are in Year 3, covid permitting.
Sports Days
We are holding off organising sports days for the time being, because of covid. At the moment, we really want to hold events for the children, but there is every likelihood that we will do this without parents. I know this will sadden many of you, but I am sure that you understand, given the current circumstances.
Covid Reminders
- Please continue to wear masks on the school site, unless exempt, and maintain social distancing when dropping off and picking up children
- If your child has a new cough, a high temperature, or loss of taste/smell please keep them at home and take them for a PCR test. We are advised that a lateral flow test is not appropriate to use with primary aged children, even if you have them available to you.
- Please let us know the outcome of a PCR test – negative or positive, as this has an immediate impact on the closure of classes (or not!)
- Following confirmation of two cases this week, Deer and Bats class are closed until June 21st. These classes are being ‘fogged’ today to make sure they are germ free!
Sunny weather
Just a reminder that children can bring in hats to wear in sunny weather. They also need sun cream on, so please administer before they come to school, as we are unable to apply this. We will aim to keep children out of the heat when it is particularly hot, and encourage them to drink lots of water. Thank you!
Fidget toys
There are still an excessive number of fidget toys in school, which many children do not actually need to help them to focus on their learning. I would like the children to stop bringing them in – we have had cases where they have been broken, much to everyone’s distress. We will provide those children who need them with an item from our stock. Thank you.
South Gloucestershire Rock & Pop School
One of South Gloucestershire Music Hub's newest ventures before the lockdown was their Rock and Pop school. They are looking to give this a boost and are keen to find out exactly what young people would like from this provision.
Please see the attached flyer, which contains details of how to complete a very short survey, to help them in the next phase of developing their comtemporay music offer.

This week, Fox class and Mrs Sutherland give their book recommendations.
Mr Mead recommends ‘Found you’ by Devon Holzwarth.
“'Found you' is a book about a kind, little bird that works with a little boy. Together they help lots of people make friends and overcome their shyness. It teaches us to be confident about ourselves and reminds us that kindness is key. It has lovely pictures and represents lots of different people in our community. A lovely read with a lovely message.”
Emily from Foxes recommends ‘The Blue Giant’ by Katie Cottle.
“I recommend this book because it teaches us a great lesson about protecting the planet. It teaches us to keep the oceans clean to protect the animals and shows us to work together, because it is everyone’s job to clean up the ocean. It also has beautiful illustrations.”
Mrs Sutherland recommends 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King
"This is a lovely story of two boys, Barney and Stig, who are complete opposites to each other but become great friends. After Barney lands himself in a cave, they find each other and have an adventurous time hunting hounds and stopping robbers. This is such a great book, hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did."
