Dear parents and carers
I have had the absolute pleasure of being on a residential camp with most of our Year 6 children this week. It was wonderful to spend time with the children - They showed us that they are ‘ready, respectful and safe,’ and I am proud of them all for their courage, perseverance and resilience. Thank you Year 6!
Y5 news:
Whilst on the subject of camp, I am pleased to say that we have booked our residential for next year’s Year 6 at Mill on the Brue in Somerset. We will be going on Monday 4th April to Friday 8th April. This is a new location for us, which comes highly recommended and has facilities for all of the activities we would usually do on our residential – more information will be given in September about this!
Also for Year 5, next week we will give out school ties which children will be expected to wear to school, every day except on PE days, when you can wear your leavers hoodies. I would really appreciate your support in making sure that the children do wear their ties, and that hoodies are only worn on PE days, as we will be returning to ‘normal.’
Y3 news:
Just a reminder that universal free school meals end for children when they enter Y3, and lunches must be paid for unless you are eligible for free school meals. Aspens, our school caterers have produced a leaflet for you, which is attached to the newsletter.
The children will also be coming home nest week, with information from South Glos council to remind you how you can apply for free school meals and how you determine if you are eligible.
Covid updates:
As you know, we are keeping our procedures in place for the remainder of the term, due to the high prevalence of cases in the local area. A new risk assessment will be in place for September, and will be distributed at the start of term.
From Monday 19th July, schools are no longer responsible for contact tracing. Close contacts will be identified via NHS Test and Trace. You will need to continue to ring school to let us know of any absence, irrespective of covid, and we will continue to log this. Families are requested to engage with NHS Test and Trace for contact identification. NHS Test and Trace will work with the positive case to identify close contacts – contacts from a school setting will only be traced where the positive case specifically identifies the individual as being a close contact. This is likely to be a small number of children/adults who would be most at risk of contracting covid due to the nature of the close contact. From 16th August, children and young people will no longer have to self-isolate if they have been identified as a close contact, but will be asked to have a PCR test. These are big changes to current procedures, determined by the government. I can understand how this might make some of you fell more anxious about covid spreading through classes as a result of this; we will continue to look after all of our children, and will continue to be vigilant with identifying any symptoms in school.
Kitchen Vacancy:
There is a vacancy in the school kitchen for 16 hours per week, approximately 11am -2pm daily, paid at the minimum wage. If you are interested in applying, please email the school office to let us know.
This week we hear from three Falcon children with their book recommendations.
Elsie-Rose's choice:
'Wonder' by R.J.Palacio,
"I like this book because it tells you that no matter what you look like, you are the same as everyone else. It also tells you that if you are being made fun of because of how you look or what you wear, then instead of holding it all in you tell someone and let your emotions flow. This heart-warming story is of a boy named August who has a deformed face. At one point he was home schooled, but his mother wanted different. However, when he goes to school, a cruel boy named Julian compares him to Star Wars characters and bullies him. Little did August know that he was going to be helped by Julian. This story wreaks emotional havoc."
Ronnie recommends:
'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C.S.Lewis
"I think you will enjoy this book because it is about magic and mysterious beings. I love it because the descriptions, characters and scenery are amazing and the drawings are very good for children 9+years. The book is about four adventurers who step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia - a world enslaved by the power of the White Witch. When almost all hope is lost, the return of the great lion, Aslan signals a great change…..and a great sacrifice.
I recommend this book to 9+ children because it has a few tricky words and I think younger children might not enjoy it that much as it is quite serious. This is a very good book to read if you want suspense."
Harry enjoys:
‘Hostage’ by Malorie Blackman
"I think you will like this book as it is full of thrilling things. The girl in the story, Angela has to escape from a kidnapper and she is very clever to do so. I think you will like this book because Angela shows bravery, courage and intelligence to figure out a way to escape from her dreadful kidnapper. I recommend this book because it is full of scary moments and suspense, it will keep you on the edge of your seat."
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are thrilled to announce that our school is joining the Children’s University Scheme in the Autumn term 2021 along with all South Gloucestershire Primary schools.
Children’s University is a charity that works in partnership with schools to develop a love of learning in children. We do this by encouraging and celebrating participation in extra-curricular activities in and outside of school. The impact of these activities is proven to be positive which is why we’re committed to creating a level playing field of opportunity and opening up access to children of all backgrounds. The children will have the opportunity to gain up to 30 certificates for their extra-curricular activities that they choose to take part in.
More information will be given out in the Autumn term and the children will have a Children’s University Assembly. Every child will have the opportunity to have a Children’s University Paper Passport of their own and their own Children’s University Online Account where they can record all their extra-curricular activity learning hours.
So that every child has the opportunity to earn learning hours over the summer break we have provided a Provisional Summer Passport which is attached. If your child is visiting museums, going to holiday clubs, taking part in the summer reading challenge at the library or taking part in any of the challenges at home listed here make sure they record them on their Provisional Summer Passport.
We will also be sending out a Children’s University Newsletter before the end of this Summer term with ideas of activities available in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area.
If you would like more information please visit www.childrensuniversity.co.uk or if you have any questions please email [email protected]
Have a wonderful summer.

Please see the attached letter from South Gloucestershire Music Hub, about music lessons they will be running in September.
South Gloucestershire Music Hub
South Gloucestershire Music Hub is running two summer programmes during the Summer Holidays.
The first is their ‘Summer Activities Programme’. This gives KS2 children with little or no musical experience the chance to have a go at learning to play the violin, guitar and brass instruments, as well as singing and percussion. It is supported by the Holiday Activity and Food Programme and therefore free to children in receipt of pupil premium funding, or who are otherwise in challenging circumstances. It is also open to any child who would like to take part, at a cost of £30 per day (or £100 if they sign up for all four days).
The second activity is their Summer Rock and Pop school. This is for children in years 5 to 9 and gives them the chance to learn to play guitar, bass guitar or drums and to get together to form a band in a week. This is available for a very reduced rate of £15 for the whole week for families in receipt of pupil premium funding, with full cost being £175.
Both activity programmes will take place at the hub in Little Stoke Primary school during the week beginning 26th July.
Full details are on the attached flyers.

TV company, Five Mile Films, are making a new series of the popular Channel 4 programme, The Dog House. They are looking for people who can offer a loving home to a rescue dog.
The series is made with Wood Green, The Animals Charity in Cambridgeshire who specialise in matching their rescue dogs with would-be owners. The Dog House follows this process, getting to know the characters and histories of the rescue dogs, an array of people from different walks of life and watching the beginnings of brand-new relationships between them. In previous series, they found that there were many reasons people might be considering bringing a dog into their life – loneliness, extra company for a child, to encourage exercise, to live in the moment more, to name a few.
The company are currently searching for people who are thinking about rehoming a rescue dog, and who would be up for sharing their various reasons for doing so. Please see the attached flyer for details on how to apply.
