Dear parents and carers
I have to say, it’s a relief to have made it to the end of term! After a successful start, the last ten days or so with increasing Covid cases have been tough. Thank you so much for all of the support you have given throughout the entire term – it is very much appreciated! I really do hope that everyone manages to have a healthy and happy half term break, and that everyone is able to return to school on Tuesday 2nd November.
Upcoming events
On Monday 15th November it is ‘odd socks day.’ This is a national day, which launches our focus on anti-bullying, where the children are encouraged to wear odd socks with their school uniform – whether it is PE uniform or ‘normal’ uniform. We encourage everyone to take part, and will take lots of photos of feet in their odd socks. Learning over the following two weeks will include assemblies on anti-bullying and activities in class to remind the children what bullying is, and how to stand up to it.
Friday 19th November is Children in Need. I will be donning my Pudsey onesie, and the children are encouraged to wear non-uniform of any kind…pyjamas, Children in Need merchandise or whatever they choose, all for a donation towards Children in Need. (Please make sure they will be warm enough though!)
Parents evenings, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th November: At the moment, we are still hoping that these will be face to face. We will be looking at the Covid situation when we come back after half term and make our decision as early as possible, before sending out booking information for you.
School Council Elections (Y1-Y6): These will take place on Friday 5th November. During the week, children will be invited to make presentations to their year group to explain why they should be elected, if they wish too. Please encourage and support your children in their presentations. Elections day is usually very exciting, and we hold our council representatives in high esteem. It’s a very worthy role!
Goodbye Mrs Symons!
On Wednesday we held a small assembly for Mrs Symons to say goodbye, with children from Y3 reading out their fond memories, and EYFS singing Twinkle Twinkle. Mrs Symons also has a few words to say below, but we wish her all the very best in her retirement!
"A very BIG thank you for all my gifts, cards and messages for my retirement and 60th birthday celebrations. I have loved my seven years at The Tynings and the last two years of phased retirement has allowed me to share my RE and PSHE expertise by doing PPA cover with many year groups. I will keep in contact with the wonderful Tynings team and will think fondly of all the pupils and their families. Have a lovely half term." Kathryn Symons
Extra-curricular clubs
After half term we will send out an up-to-date list of the clubs we are running. Some clubs have some vacancies, for example KS1 Choir. Mr Stanton’s football club will be ending so that he can work on a homework club for the older children. Most clubs will stay the same, but will change in Term 3.
CSET have organised a Halloween challenge for children and families to take part in during half term. It provides them with activities to undertake and they will have to send in photos/evidence of them completing the challenges. The children have to complete 6 to get their gold certificate. Please see the attached poster for the activities.

We have been asked by Avon Fire & Rescue Service to share some key safety advice for you and your children this spooky season. Each year, the emergency services deal with many accidents which could easily be avoided if everyone followed these simple safety tips. This week we hear from Mrs Symons and Bat class, with their book reviews.
Miss Hannan recommends the book 'Leaf' by Sandra Dieckmann
"I recommend this book, because it is a beautiful story about some very important issues. It begins with a polar bear who washes up on the edge of a forest as he has floated far from home. The animals who live in the forest fear the polar bear and make a big effort to avoid him. He is lonely and upset until one day he creates a fantastic plan. This is a must read book with incredible pictures. Year 3 have loved it!"
Jaxson from Bats recommends the book 'On a magical do-nothing day' by Beatrice Alemagna
"This has been our class text this term. It is about a little boy who goes on an adventure because he is bored. It teaches you about fun things you can do instead of playing computer games all the time. I loved this book because it makes you realise how magical the outdoors can be and how much fun you can have."
"This is a colourful, fun read for all future activists! It has four sections about you, the community, humanity and the environment. Kelly Swift has packed many ideas into a book full of ideas and activities. Could you design a mood board, or design a poster about volunteering? Can you spot fake news and name three green heroes? So, start your journey to make the world a better place!"
