Dear parents and carers
It’s so good to have everyone back and to see that children and adults who were impacted by our Covid outbreak before half term are mostly back in school, feeling well and healthy. At a meeting today, the local authority said that cases in South Glos are going down (although still high), and certainly we have not had any new cases this week – phew! Enhanced measures remain in place until the end of next week, so that we can keep an eye on the situation. This is authority-wide guidance.

A flyer is included in this newsletter to remind you that we have a virtual Book Fair running now until Tuesday. Click on www.booksforbugs.co.uk/shop and choose your books.

Online safety information!
Squid Game
We have noticed this week that children are playing ‘Red Light, Green Light’ from ‘Squid Game’ on Netflix. Squid Game is rated a 15 and contains gory, explicit scenes which children are starting to replicate and discuss in school.
We know the fact that children have mentioned Squid Game does not necessarily mean they are watching it, but it could mean that they have seen parts of the programme recreated on social media, for example Tik Tok, or they could have heard other people talking about it. They may have seen or played an online game that is based on it.
We feel that the games the children are playing are inappropriate, and will be talking to them about this in the coming week. Your support in this would be greatly appreciated.
The following website contains some useful information and guidance regarding Squid Game:
Evil Santa
Whilst on the subject of safety online, some schools are reporting that children are being told to harm themselves and others via ‘evil Santa.’ This seems to coming to children via You Tube kids. I don’t know if this is a hoax or not, but wanted to bring it to your attention just in case.
What can parents do regarding Squid Game and Evil Santa?
- Ensure that children are closely supervised when using the internet and watching YouTube videos.
- Set up filters on your home internet to help prevent age inappropriate content being accessed on devices in your home (for advice on this go to https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-centre/parents-and-carers/parental-controls-offered-your-home-internet-provider )
- We would advise that you do not directly mention or discuss Squid Game or Evil Santa with your child – they might be unaware of it, and mentioning it could make them more likely to seek it out
- Where appropriate and possible, do let your child know they can talk to you or a member of school staff about anything they see online that they find upsetting.
- If you hear them talking about Squid Game or Evil Santa, if they mention it to you, talk to them about how these shows and videos are not meant for young children. For more pointers on talking to your child about online safety, see this page on the NSPCC website
- We would encourage you to take this opportunity to check your internet and Netflix settings for your child’s profile. On Netflix, you can set maturity ratings so that your child only sees TV shows and films that have a rating suitable for their age.
At The Tynings we are committed to working with parents and carers to keep all of our pupils safe – I hope you find the above information helpful.

We are very excited to introduce ‘Weaving Well-being’! This is
a new scheme of work designed to teach children skills and
strategies which develop positive mental health and promote
well-being. It will be taught in PSHE lessons alongside ‘Jigsaw’,
our current scheme of work. We plan to have a well-being lesson
at the beginning and end of every term. Each child will have
their own ‘Weaving Well-being’ book. There is a different theme for each Year Group.
Today, your child will bring home a leaflet for you.
It will explain a little about ‘Weaving Well-being’
and it will give you a description of what your child
will be learning in each lesson. It will also give ideas
of how you can support your child with their
learning.

This week we hear from Mrs Berger and Hedgehog class, with their book reviews.
Mrs Berger's book recommendation is 'What’s Your Angle, Pythagoras' by Julie Ellis.
"It’s a fantastic tale about a young boy who uses his maths skills to help his family and the local community. The book also has brilliant illustrations which really brings the action to life.
You can just read it as a entertaining story. However, it sneakily contains lots of maths facts too. Read this book to find out why right angle triangles are so useful to us. Bet you didn’t know that we use right angle triangles so often in our everyday lives!"
Mrs English recommends 'Tilda Tries Again' by Tom Percival
"I really enjoy reading this book to the children in my class and to my children at home. Tilda really likes the world she lives in, but then her world suddenly turns upside down. She then is in a dark place. However she becomes resilient and embraces a 'can do ' approach to life to overcome the challenges that she comes across. She never gives up and learns to always believe in herself"
Lacey from Hedgehogs likes 'Ruby's Worry' by Tom Percival
"I like this book because it has lots of worries in. I worry about the dark."
