Dear parents and carers
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for our parent consultations this week; the staff tell me they were very successful! I hope you also enjoyed the opportunity to see the standard of work your children are achieving – they are certainly making progress! If you have not been able to speak to your child’s class teacher, please catch them at the end of a school day to arrange a time. It’s really important that we work together!
This week, we have been thinking about Remembrance. Yesterday all of the children took part in two minutes silence to remember those who have fought in wars. The children have painted pebbles which we are going to use to make a permanent display outside the front of the school as part of our memory ‘Garden of Hope,’ which we will build in the New Year.
LOCAL AUTHORITY COVID UPDATES
The number of cases of covid is falling thankfully, however, the LA would like all schools to continue to use preventative measures until the end of November. This means that KS2 children will continue to have lunches in their classrooms, assemblies will continue to be held remotely, and bubbles will be maintained in breakfast and after school clubs. Staff will continue to wear masks when moving around the building, and if you choose to wear them when dropping off and picking up, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.
ANTI-BULLYING WEEK AND ODD SOCKS DAY
Next week’s assemblies will focus on our anti-bullying strategies, how we can stand up to bullying and how we can support those being bullied. It all begins with ‘odd socks day’ on Monday! Please can your children wear odd socks with their school uniform.
CHILDREN IN NEED
Also next week, on Friday, it is Children in Need day. The children can come to school in non-uniform for a donation towards our annual collection for this charity. Any Pudsey bear merchandise is welcome!
STAFFING NEWS
Angela Prentice, one of our inclusion team, is leaving next week, to join her sister in working on set production, which I have to say sounds rather exciting. Angela has been a real asset to the school since she joined us last year, and we are sorry to see her go – we wish her the best of luck!

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal
The Tynings have been supporting this appeal for the last three years.
By buying a gift you can make a real difference to families in our local community.
Give A Gift And Light Up A Life!
As you do your Christmas shopping could you buy an extra gift?
They are looking for brand new gifts for children aged between 0 - 18 especially ages under 3 and over 10.
Just a few ideas - games, colouring books and pencils, jigsaws, construction toys, storybooks.
Please bring your gift into school by Monday 22nd November – the Salvation Army will wrap all the gifts.
Thank you
Janet Poole
Family Support Worker
Christchurch in Downend will be holding their Christingle service on Sunday 28th November.
Christingle services tap into an old tradition of children carrying oranges with candles, to symbolise Jesus as the light of the world. These very popular services are designed for families to enjoy together.

Otters and Deer give their book reviews this week.
Mrs Board recommends 'Windrush Child' by Benjamin Zephaniah
"This book is amazing! I am reading it to my class and not only are the children engrossed in the story they are also learning a lot of history too. It's about a young boy's journey from Jamaica to England and the struggles he had growing up in Manchester during those times. Empire Windrush was the name of a ship that brought thousands of men and women from Jamaica to Britain in June 1948."
James from Otters recommends 'The 1000 Year Boy' by Ross Welford
"I am really enjoying 'The 1000 Year Boy' as it is a very heart touching story. It is funny, scary and can sometimes be very serious. I like it because it moves very well, there is no dragging like a lot of books. The chapters are short so it is very easy to read. I am half way through it and I am already wanting more. It is an action packed tale and is really hard to put down. I am really enjoying it and it is just as good as the other books by Ross Welford. My favourite is 'Time Travelling with a Hamster.' I highly recommend reading books by this author."
Miss Thomas recommends ‘Emma Jane’s Aeroplane’ by Katie Haworth and Daniel Rieley.
"Deer class are currently reading this lovely rhyming book. It takes the reader on a journey to different cities around the world where Emma-Jane sees new sights and makes new friends. As well as helping children to learn about different places in the world, the book promotes the importance of team work and overcoming problems when Emma Jane’s aeroplane encounters a storm. Great for children with a sense of adventure!"
Saoirse in Deers recommends ‘This Book Just Ate My Dog!’ by Richard Byrne.
"I really enjoy reading this book as it is really funny. The book keeps eating everything it sees! At the end of the book, Bella (the main character) speaks to the reader to ask for help to escape the book. Will you be able to save her? Read it to find out!"
