Dear parents and carers
We had a lovely start to the week with the steel band workshop in Y5 and Y6 (see article below) They sounded beautiful, and it was brilliant seeing the children have their turn and hearing the tunes they were making – I even had a go myself! Many thanks to the PSFA who funded this workshop to enrich our curriculum.
Protocols for Christmas performances
Whilst we only have a few cases of covid in school, we would like to ensure that the spread is kept to a minimum. We are keen to have all of our Christmas events running as we believe the children need them, but we do have to put in place some mitigations.
Before you come to school / go to church to watch a performance:
- Please do a lateral flow test. If this is positive please do not come into school
- If you have any symptoms of covid – persistent cough, high temperature, loss of smell/taste, please do not come into school
Whilst in school / church:
- You will be asked to sanitise your hands on entry.
- You must wear a mask throughout the performance. (unless medically exempt)
- The hall doors and windows will be kept open – this may be a little chilly, so please dress accordingly! (Although it may get warm once we are all in there.) We will monitor CO2 levels throughout the performances, so that we can open/close doors and windows to strike a balance between the temperature and air quality
- Please remain seated at the end of each performance, whilst the children leave the hall.
We would also ask that a maximum of two people attend. We know that many parents / grandparents may wish to come and see the festivities, but we do need to limit numbers on this occasion.
As always, thank you for your understanding and support, as we aim to get the Christmas period off to a great start with beautiful singing, big smiles, fun and proud families!
Mini Christmas Fair
There are also protocols in place for the fair to run, in order to prevent the spread of covid. As for all school activities, please make sure you do not attend if you have any symptoms. We have limited the number of stalls available for you this year – it really is going to be a ‘mini’ experience!
- Please wear a mask on site (unless eating!)
- Because of limiting numbers, only Tynings children will be able to visit Father Christmas at the fair this year.
- Please only attend the fair around the time of your visit to Father Christmas eg 20 minutes either side, in order to reduce the number of people on site.
- If you do not have tickets to Father Christmas, you are still welcome to visit – grab a hot dog & chips and enjoy the tombola stalls.
Y6 visit to Clifton Cathedral
On Monday afternoon, Y6 will be singing Christmas carols at the Clifton Cathedral. This is a tradition which began in South Gloucestershire many years ago, and this year they are holding several performances to accommodate all of the schools who wish to take part. I know they will enjoy their experience and represent the school brilliantly! Please could the children wear their full school uniform for this – shirts, ties, jumpers/cardigans. No hoodies please.
On Monday, Year 5 and Year 6 had a brilliant morning as they learnt to play the steel drums! Each class had its own workshop and then at the end of the day we heard the performers play some Christmas songs, steel band style. Amazing!
Year 5’s history topic this term has been on ‘Celebrating Bristol’. Part of this topic has included learning about the Windrush generation where lots of black people from the Caribbean came to Britain (Bristol) to help rebuild it after the war and so created a diverse culture. St Paul’s Carnival is a celebration of this, and steel bands are a huge part of any carnival. As Year 6 have been learning about WW2, we felt that this also linked in well to their topic too.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to the PSFA for funding this. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and felt the carnival vibes all day long.

Dings Crusaders RFC are a long established rugby club based in Frenchay, Bristol with state of the art facilities & most importantly a thriving girls section.
They are keen to increase the numbers of girls at U13 level (Years 7 & 8) as well as recruit girls at U10/11s - as they will be able to play girls only rugby next season, so they are offering to help them to train and gain some experience.
It's a friendly group of girls, of mixed ability and experience who thoroughly enjoy playing the game - it's all about fun, teamwork and keeping fit.
Training takes place on Wednesdays at 6.30 pm at Shaftesbury Park, BS16 1LG. More information can be found at [email protected].
Mrs Weeks and Pine Martens class give their book reviews this week.
Mrs Weeks recommends 'Oi Frog!' by Kes Gray & Jim Field
"It all begins when Cat dramatically shouts, “Oi Frog! Sit on a log!”, but Frog doesn’t really want to sit on a log, so he questions the rhyming pair. Cat continues to confidently tell Frog what objects different animals should sit on. Cat’s list goes on and on, with Frog querying how comfortable some of these suggestions are. It all ends with a hilarious twist, which I for one did not see coming! The bright colourful pictures really make you smile so you want to read it again and create your own funny rhyming pairs."
