Dear parents and carers
What a delightful week we have had in school! The children (and staff!) have come back refreshed from their break and everyone has been very busy this week. Yesterday’s book celebrations for World Book Day saw children making slime, dressing up as tigers, and then coming back into school in their pyjamas for bedtime stories. An excellent day focussing on the pleasure of reading! Thank you to the PSFA for providing the hot chocolate and biscuits.
Covid updates
It feels like every restriction has now been moved, and it has certainly been good to see whole faces this week, rather than masked ones. We still have regular hand washing and ventilation in place, and completely respect the wishes of anyone who continues to wear a mask.
We have had three cases of covid this week – none transmitted in school, which reminds us that it is still out there. Some guidance remains in place to help minimise the number of cases:
- If your child is unwell with any of the covid symptoms, (or a heavy cold or flu-like symptoms) please keep them at home and book a PCR test.
- If your child tests positive for covid, please keep them at home for a minimum of five days. You can test them on day 4 and 5 – if these are both clear, they can come back on day 6. Please wait for two clear tests before returning.
- If you do not test your child, but they have a high temperature, cough and loss of smell/taste, you are encouraged to keep your child at home for ten days.
Red Nose Day
Red Nose Day is Friday 18th March. This will be a non-uniform day for the children, with a dressing up theme of ‘heroes.’ Children can dress as a super hero or a local hero, or they can wear their own choice of non-uniform. We will also be holding a staff ‘red nose and spoon race’ during the day for the children to enjoy. We would love to collect your donations for Comic Relief on this day (but everyone can wear non-uniform)
Parent Consultation Evenings
…will be face to face!! We will be having parent’s evenings on Tuesday 22nd March and Wednesday 23rd March. The appointment system will go live from Monday 14th March, so please book up to see your child’s class teacher. These appointments will be ten minutes long, and we will keep strictly to time by ringing a bell. To help facilitate this, all of KS2 meetings (Y3 – Y6) will be in the hall. We are looking forward to seeing you.
School uniform
A reminder that we do have a school uniform – the vast majority of our children wear it well, and are well presented. There are some cases of non-uniform appearing, particularly around hoodies or hair colour! I would like to remind you that we prefer children at The Tynings to not dye their hair. Thank you.
Code of conduct
We have had a staff code of conduct in place for a good number of years, which all staff have to adhere to. We are looking to create a similar code of conduct for parents, which would be around recommended behaviours. Whilst we believe we have strong relationships with our parent community, and that we all work together to create a happy, harmonious environment, occasionally something crops up in which we think – ‘that’s not right.’ This might involve the way parents use social media to talk about the school or individual members of staff, or it might be about incidents which occur in the school office, or sometimes even outside of school when bringing children to school or on the pickup. We have a draft code of conduct for you to look at – if you wish to make any comments about this, please contact me via [email protected] Thank you.

A fantastic day of celebrating World Book Day ended with an exciting evening of bedtime stories. There was great excitement in the hall when children returned to school in the dark wearing their PJs and carrying their favourite toy. Thank you very much to the PSFA who supplied the hot chocolate and biscuits.
We have enjoyed sharing the book scenes in class - if you'd still like to make one, please bring it into class next week.
As we all know, reading is a real pleasure that children should be immersed in every day of the year. Your child brought home a World Book day voucher that they can swap for a book in any good book shop and a scholastic book list for your information.
If you are still looking for ideas, take a look at this website:
Year 6 were treated to a visit by local author, Marie Whitehead, this week. She shared with us a story she had written with her son during lockdown: 'Walter the whale and his plastic tale'. A fantastic book that explains why we need to be doing more to combat plastic pollution: a topic that Year 6 are very passionate about.
We heard about what it takes to write and publish a book; it was also fascinating to hear about her son's journey to become an illustrator.
If you would like to purchase this book, you will find it here:
Year 6 loved hearing the story and would very much recommend it!

This week we hear from Mrs Berger and Deer and Falcon classes, with their book recommendations.
Mrs Berger's book recommendation is ‘My Friends and Me’ by Stephanie Stansbie and Katy Halford.
"It’s a story about Jamie, a young child with lots of friends. All his friends have different kinds of families and the families get up to all sorts of fun activities. They are different to each other in lots of ways but there is one thing all the adults have in common. You will need to read the book to find out what…
I LOVE this book for so many reasons. Not only is it easy to read with lots of colourful pictures, it is also funny and brings a smile to your face. Most importantly, it celebrates families of all shapes and sizes. All our families are special."
Miss Thomas recommends 'Billy and the Dragon' by Nadia Shireen
"In Year 2, we have been really enjoying this conquering the monster tale. It’s about a young girl called Billy who is on the way to a party when her cat is stolen by a savage dragon. Courageous Billy sets out on a mission to rescue her beloved cat but will she manage to defeat the dragon? A funny tale with interesting characters and lots of humour and excitement!"
George from Deer class recomends 'Tyrannosaurus Drip' by Julia Donalson & David Roberts
"This book is really funny! It’s about a dinosaur called Drip who accidentally ends up with the wrong dinosaur family when some eggs get switched. He goes on a journey to find his family and the place he belongs."
Miss Nicholls recommends 'DON’T READ THIS BOOK!' by Jill Lewis
"It was the catchy title of this book that instantly grabbed my attention. The fact that it tells you ‘don’t read’, made me excited and curious – and of course I had to read it!
The book is about an ill-tempered King who wants a story – but his storyteller sadly hasn’t got one. The two characters then go on a journey to write a story. The King takes your on an adventure – and the journey introduces and visits a variety of fairy tales along the way. There are lots of links that children can make to what they already know, and I really like the way the King introduces the process of writing a story and talks directly to the reader throughout the book – a lovely personal touch. It is an engaging book that has wonderful pictures and best of all a great story at the end!"
Izzie from Falcons recommends – 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Getaway' by Jeff Kinney
"I recommend this book because it is really interesting it tells you all about Greg’s adventures and life.
It is written as a diary and you really get to understand how he is feeling. In ‘The Getaway’, Greg and his family discover strange happenings at the campsite they are staying at and need to plan an escape. This is where it gets really thrilling – but you will have to read it yourself if you want to find out what happens. I hope you enjoy it!"
