Dear parents and carers
Thank you for the supportive and kind comments you have made about our Ofsted report which was sent to you earlier in the week. I hope you have all managed to read it – if you have any questions about any aspects, please do ask.
Hot weather
It has been beautifully warm this week, with today and yesterday being particularly hot. When the weather is like this, we reduce the time the children spend running around outside, and encourage the children to sit in the shade. Today, for example, we have limited outdoor time at lunchtime to 15 minutes – some of the older children aren’t particularly keen on this, but I have explained that it is about their safety. Thank you, for preparing the children with sun cream and hats.
Staffing News
This week 3 new members of the team were appointed.
- Miss Sophie Szerencses has been appointed to our EYFS team, covering Mrs Leach’s maternity leave. Miss Szerencses is an experienced teacher relocating from Surrey, and will be working on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Mrs Louise Britton is joining the Year 4 team to cover Miss Thomas’ sabbatical from September to April. She will work full time in Kingfishers class. Mrs Britton is a very experienced teacher and has worked in Pensford and in Downend previously
- Miss Hannah Morey will be part of the Year 5 team, working with Mrs Board in Otters class. Miss Morey has covered Mrs Butter’s absence this year, and is delighted to have been made a member of staff. She knows us well!
- Finally, Miss H Nicholls will work on Friday’s in Falcons class, as Miss Curtis works for 4 days. Mrs Nicholls also knows us well as she has been covering Miss Curtis’ leadership time and fifth day since November.
All of these new members are very welcome to Team Tynings!
Sports Day
KS2 children will be having their sports morning on Monday 27th June and KS1 & EYFS will have theirs on Tuesday 28th June. Both events will begin at 9.15 and parents are most welcome to come and watch. Please bring something to sit on!
Cake Sale.
The School Council have arranged a cake sale on Wednesday 22nd June, on the playground after school. They would really appreciate any donations of cakes, which can be brought into school on the Wednesday morning. The children are raising money to support the development of our school grounds, creating habitats for wildlife.
Length of school day
A reminder that from September, school will continue until 3.15, and not 3.10. As part of this change, the gates will be unlocked from 3pm rather than any earlier.

Have fun!
This week, we had an exciting visit from author Lindsay Galvin. Year 6 are currently reading her book 'Darwin's Dragons' and are enjoying reading this adventure book. She led an assembly for KS2 and talked about her brand-new book 'My friend the Octopus'. We loved hearing about her research at the Natural History Museum where she saw an actual species discovered by Charles Darwin! Following the assembly, Y6 enjoyed writing workshops led by Lindsay - they were shown what it takes to be an author including thinking about the audience and the editing and drafting process. One child commented, " She's really inspired me today!".
Many thanks to the PSFA who kindly funded the experience.

Miss Curtis’s book review:'My Friend the Octopus' by Lindsay Galvin
"Year 6 are reading ‘Darwin’s Dragons’ by Lindsay Galvin. ‘My friend the Octopus’ is the latest book by the same author. Excitingly, she visited our school this week and talked about her love of octopuses and the adventure of getting to touch one! ‘My Friend the Octopus’ is a story which shows the bond between a young girl and an Octopus that completely captures your heart. I recommend this book for anyone in KS2."
Sophie recommends 'Agatha Oddly by Lena Jones
"This book is very exciting: it is a detective story based on the main character called Agatha Oddly. I like the illustrations and the mystery is very good and makes you want to keep reading to know what happens. I would recommend this book to children between 9 and 11."
Mr Mead recommends ‘Old Enough to Save the Planet’ by Loli Kirby.
"This non-fiction recount takes you on a journey around the world to meet 12 incredible children. All of them have made a positive difference to their community and have made a step towards sustainability. This books shows us that we really are old enough to save the planet."
Zac recommends ‘Charlie and Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl
"I recommended this book because I love the touring around the chocolate factory and hearing what happened to all the children. I also love hearing about all of the different sweets and chocolates."
